Meet the Jury

Phantomnesis was shaped by the judgment of six jurors whose own careers embody the very premise of the call: composers, performers, and researchers who have each spent years bringing overlooked musical systems, regional practices, and reimagined traditions into contemporary listening. Their collective geography spans a striking range of musical worlds — from Tehran, where Persian modal systems meet the structural language of the Western symphony, to Hannover, where electroacoustic composition and open-source technology intersect with musical traditions from Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, Iran, and Uruguay. It extends to Toronto, where decades of Canadian public broadcasting shaped how new music reaches its audience, and to Skopje, where voice, body, and live electronics converge in deeply somatic performance. It reaches into Austria, across Vienna, Graz, and Klagenfurt, where artistic research and jazz scholarship meet institutional leadership, and into Bangkok, where traditional Thai instruments are woven into some of the most radical interdisciplinary practice in contemporary music today.

This breadth of perspective was essential to Phantomnesis. Evaluating work that draws on forgotten, near-forgotten, and reimagined musical systems requires jurors who understand those systems not as abstractions but as living practice — and who can, in turn, recognize when a submission succeeds in translating that practice into a genuinely new and coherent musical language. Cambiata Arts is deeply grateful to each juror for the care, rigor, and generosity of time they brought to this process.

Phantomnesis submissions are now closed

Submissions for Phantomnesis are now closed, thank you.
After months of work by the Phantomnesis Call Team at Cambiata Arts, we’ve received an incredible number of high-quality works, and we’re grateful for the trust and care reflected in the submissions.

Our jury teams will begin assessment shortly; we will contact selected artists directly, and we will post updates for applicants as the process moves forward. Phantomnesis is curated around works that explore the forgotten, the near-forgotten, and the reimagined—bringing neglected musical systems, regional practices, extinct gestures, and overlooked aesthetic pathways into today’s listening.

We’re deeply grateful to the many organizations and platforms that helped amplify the Phantomnesis call and connect it with artists internationally—especially Sound and Music, Artists in Canada, American Composers Forum, the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), the ULYSSES Platform, the British Electroacoustic Network, Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS), Allhear, and Substack—along with many others who shared the opportunity through their communities and networks.

We’ll post process updates on this page as the jury assessment begins and progresses. Selected artists will be contacted directly by email, and we’ll also share general timeline updates here so all applicants can follow along. If you have urgent questions, please email:
